Adil Mukhi
I started Dr. Interested after seeing too many youth struggle to navigate med school paths or build core skills like research and public speaking. This platform exists to change that--by giving students the tools and guidance they need to thrive. Beyond this, I'm a public speaker, youth advocate & changemaker! I lead initiatives that empower tens of thousands of young people, including founding Dr. Interested and contributing to the Play-to-Heal movement. I've supported youth-focused research and policy, including a CIHR grant with SickKids for the OPTIMAL Project and recommendations presented to the Future of Sport in Canada Commission. Passionate about mentorship, research, and leadership, I aim to create opportunities for youth to innovate and lead. If you want to learn more about me, feel free to check out my website, which I am sure is linked somewhere

A letter of recommendation from someone in medicine — a physician, resident, or medical student — carries real weight on premed and medical school applications, because it comes from someone who can speak to whether you'd actually be good at this. The problem is most high schoolers have no idea how to get one.
A teacher can vouch for your work ethic. A doctor or medical student can vouch for whether you handled a clinical environment well, asked good questions, or showed genuine curiosity about medicine — which is a different, more specific kind of endorsement.
Don't shadow someone for one afternoon and immediately ask for a letter. It reads as transactional, and the letter will be generic and forgettable ("Student shadowed me for a day and seemed interested") — which can actually hurt more than help.
This is exactly the gap structured mentorship programs are built to close. Dr. Interested connects student members with medical students directly, through mentorship and our webinar series, specifically so students without a doctor in the family or existing hospital connections can still build the kind of relationship that leads to a genuine, specific letter of recommendation.
A short, specific, enthusiastic letter from someone who actually knows you beats a long, generic one from someone impressive you barely interacted with.
Dr. Interested is a youth-led healthcare education nonprofit, and everything above is easier with the right team behind you. As a member, you get real, verified extracurricular credit for the work you're already trying to do:
